About us
Who we are

The Liberian Association of Arizona (LAA) is a Non-Profit, non-governmental organization established in the state of Arizona for the following objectives:

  • To promote unity, development, equal opportunities and participation of Liberians and non-Liberians residing in the state of Arizona.
  • To create public awareness about Liberia and the Liberian community and contribute toward the socio-economic development of Liberia and the Liberian Community in Arizona.
  • To collaborate with other relevant associations, clubs or organizations with similar objectives.

The Liberian Association of Arizona is dedicated to serving and supporting the Liberian community in Arizona. We endeavor to provide resources, assistance, and a sense of belonging to all members of the community. Our focus is to promote unity, empowerment, and cultural preservation within the Liberian community in Arizona.

  • Harry Artoe Gkornean
    President

    Harry Gkornean is a leadership and management professional and an entrepreneur. He’s a 2011 graduate of the University of Liberia, where he studied Economics & Management. In 2016, Harry graduated from the Thunderbird School of Global Management at Arizona State University with a Master of Global Management degree. A year later, he earned his second graduate degree from Grand Canyon University, where he read organizational leadership. He has pursued additional postgraduate studies in Psychology (Applied Behavioral Analysis) and Clinical mental health counseling. 

    In addition to his professional and entrepreneurial experiences working in financial services management, business development, and policy design and analysis in the public, private, and International non-governmental sectors across three countries (Liberia, Guinea & USA), Harry has worked extensively in community development, activism, and advocacy for over ten years in Liberia. He served as Secretary General, Student Representative, and occasionally as Acting president of the University of Liberia Student Union, representing the interests of over 20,000 university students. Harry also served as Vice president of the Liberia National Student Union (LINU), leading all students across Liberia. 

    On January 20, 2024, Harry was elected the fifth president of the Liberian Association of Arizona.

  • Mariam Solomon
    Vice President

    Mariam is a registered nurse and a mother to a handsome young man. She has worked in the field of nursing for nearly five years. Mariam holds an Associate of Arts degree in Applied Nursing and a Bachelor of Nursing degree. She is the Queen of the Union of Liberian Associations in America (ULAA) helping to raise fund for deserving Liberians. She is committed to unifying the Liberian community and ensuring that Liberians living in Arizona are ably represented and served. Mariam got her motivation to serve her community from the life of her late grandfather David Faulkner who served Liberia in many capacities including police officer, special service personnel to former presidents Tolbert and Doe. During her grandfather’s burial, Mariam promised to commit herself to the development and transformation of Liberia and Liberians.

  • Romeo Dennis
    Secretary General

    Romeo Dennis is a committed husband, married for 13yrs and has been blessed with three beautiful children. He obtained an associate degree in Criminal Justice from Phoenix College and worked in Corrections for a brief moment with the State of Arizona. As time fell through the cracks, Romeo developed a passionate interest for business, specifically financial education. 

    Currently, he works for Primerica as an Independent contractor and licensed in a couple of states and is currently pursuing higher financial licenses. His passion lies in helping people protect their most precious asset: "family" but also teaching them how to  invest atleast the minimum of $50 a month to help propel them to their financial goal. Romeo has helped many families in the community, and is looking forward to doing even more especially now that he has stepped into a leadership role within the community. On January 20, 2024, Romeo was elected Secretary General of the Liberian Association of Arizona.

  • Frederick Togba
    Financial Secretary

    Frederick is a father of six (three boys and three girls). He is very passionate about helping people in the Liberian community. He was born in Monrovia, Liberia and repatriated to the United States in July of 2002 with his uncle and family. Frederick obtained a bachelor’s degree in computer Programming at the AME Zion University in Liberia before moving to the United States. While in America, he graduated with an Associate of science degree at Phoenix college. He is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) at the Northern Arizona university. His life, as a parent and student, has been both an exciting and challenging journey. He served the Liberian community in several capacities. Frederick is presently the board chairman of the Grand Gedeh Association of Arizona and a board member of the Nimba kolakeh Association of Arizona. He was also elected as the Secretary General of the Liberian Association of Arizona under the Myers /Bernard Leadership (2019 - 2021). On January 20, 2024, Frederick was elected Financial Secretary of the Liberian Association of Arizona.

  • Samuel Cooper
    Assistant Financial Secrertary/Director of Financial Management

    Samuel Cooper is the Assistant Financial Secretary of the Liberian Association of Liberia (LAA). He is a husband, devoted Christian and a father of two handsome boys. He has over a decade of financial sector experience as a financial professional with a unique passion in helping families and individuals. He served in many leadership roles throughout the years including financial secretary, president, adviser and a coach. Many of those opportunities were in the Church community, his neighborhood, and the corporate world. Samuel has advanced degrees in Accounting and Finance. He was appointed by President Harry Artoe Gkornean to serve as the Director of Financial management of the Liberian Association of Arizona.
